Storm surge gates

Storm surge gates are gates that can close off an entire inlet during storm surge events. During normal water levels, the gate components lie in the associated shore facility. During a storm surge, the gates will be turned out until they meet each other.  Then, water will be pumped into the gates' chambers, so that they are lowered down onto the seabed, sealing off the inlet. This solution is expensive and requires shore areas storage of the gates when they are not in use.
