Frequently asked questions

What impact will higher temperatures have on our drinking water?

Answer: One of the qualities of Danish tap water is its freshness, and this is due to the fact that the temperature of Danish groundwater is 8-9ºC. Temperatures higher than this affect the freshness and taste of the water and can also lead to poorer quality due to higher concentrations of microorganisms and migration from pipes and fixtures during transport of the water from the waterworks to the consumer.

What is the risk of water shortages during the summer period?

Answer: With climate change, all in all there will be more groundwater. During summer, however, there will be risk of drought, which could affect uppermost groundwater aquifers and present problems for drinking water utilities that do not have deep wells. This risk is exacerbated by the fact that many of the uppermost groundwater aquifers are also used for other purposes such as irrigation of farmland.

How will more rain affect the quality of bathing water?

Answer: After big rainstorms, sewers and drainage systems will lead untreated sewage into watercourses and the sea and thereby affect the quality of bathing water. Bacteria in sewage will quickly die in saline water, and will also eventually die in freshwater, so that in the course of a couple of days, the contamination will be gone and the water can safely be bathed in again.
