Large-scale flood-proofing near Knudshoved will save the fire-bellied toad

The EU LIFE programme, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency and the Rosenfeldt Estate have joined forces to climate-proof the Knudshoved Odde peninsula.

The aim is to protect the rare fire-bellied toads that live in the area. The price of the project will tally up to around DKK 38 million.

Large flood events following climate change threaten to destroy the habitat of the fire-bellied toad on the Knudshoved Odde peninsula. It is feared that flood events will lead to saltwater inundation of this peninsula in Southern Zealand, which is among the few remaining habitats for the toad in Denmark.

But help is now on the way in the form of 25 new, climate resilient ponds that will be established at a safe distance from the sea and thus from the expected rising seawater masses. The project will comprise 100 hectares of new grasslands, coastal meadows and freshwater meadows.
