Cloudbursts

Climate change will lead to prolonged rainfall events and more intense local cloudbursts.

Your home insurance policy covers damage to your home caused by extreme cloudbursts.

In a typical cloudburst, the rain falls at a rate of at least 40 mm in 24 hours or at a rate of at least 15 mm in 30 minutes.

Your home-contents insurance covers damage to your belongings.

Storms

Climate change will lead to more frequent and more powerful storms. In terms of insurance cover,

a storm is defined as wind speeds of 17.2 meters or more per second.

Your home insurance policy covers storm damage to your home, but the compensation provided depends on how well maintained your home is. It is your responsibility as a homeowner to keep your buildings in good maintenance, and to make sure any antennae, tarpaulins, scaffolding, etc. are safely secured.

Any damage to your home contents in connection with storm damage to your home is covered by your home-contents insurance.

Storm surges

A storm surge is exempt from insurance cover. You may have coverage through the Danish

public storm surge scheme. You must submit your storm surge damage claim to your insurance company. Read more here: Danish Natural Hazards Council website

To be covered by the scheme, you must have taken out fire insurance on your home.

Heavy snow

Your home insurance covers damage caused by accumulation of snow (heavy snow) on roofs, etc., while damage as a result of  melted

snowdrift is usually not covered. Some insurance companies offer extended cover to cover

snowdrift meltwater in the attic, for example.

Lightning strikes

Climate change may cause more frequent thunderstorms and more lightening. Your home insurance covers damage to your buildings and fixed installations in the event of lightning strikes, whereas your home-contents insurance covers any damage to your home contents due to short circuits.
